But how nice would it be then, if you could just do your practice at home, in your own living room? You don’t need much. Just a nice yoga mat and a few handy tips. Check it out!

How to turn your living room to yoga space? Try these tips

To lower the yoga bar for myself, I turn my living room into a yoga school twice a week. This way, I can practice yoga whenever it suits me and in a way that I like. The first few times it felt a bit awkward, but now I’m getting the hang of it. Maybe the tips below will help you on your way:

1) Fix the time

A vague intention won’t get you there. So I’ve made a deal with myself, that twice a week, i will get out of bed half an hour earlier than usually, to do my yoga exercises. For me, the morning is most convenient. My boyfriend isn’t awake then yet so I can do whatever I want, without being disturbed.

2) Create a nice space in the house

The next step is to make space. Not just figuratively but literally. I myself live together in a 50-square-metre flat, but still manage to free up a corner in the living room. Before I get on my mat, I first check if there is no clutter in my field of vision because with a pile of unpaid bills in the corner of your eye, it is hard to relax. I also open a window for some extra oxygen.

3) Don’t be to hard on yourself

I’ve made a deal with myself to do home yoga twice a week. I try to keep fixed days for this, but I’m certainly not rigid. By staying flexible, I keep it fun for myself. For me, Friday and Sunday feel good, but I might swap these days for a Monday and a Wednesday. Every session is beneficial!

4) Make sure there is variety

Haphazardly doing some exercises doesn’t always work for me. Sometimes I really need a teacher to talk me through my practice.
On YouTube you can find yoga channels for every moment and really anything you want. That way, you can easily try different types of yoga and find out what you like best. You can also take classes from international teachers, such as Yoga with Adriene. Give it a try!

5) Turn your living room into a yoga space with fun accessories

Ohmat organic yogamatSince it is not always easy to take the time for yoga, I decided to make a little celebration of it. So I treated myself to a fine pair of yoga leggings and an organic yoga mat from OHMat, which is made of natural rubber with no unpleasant chemical smell. OHMat is also vegan proof and has a super soft top layer of microfibre. Before starting my practice, I light a candle and use an aura spray to create the desired atmosphere. I also make sure I prepare warm goat’s wool socks and a soft blanket for when I lie in savasana after my practice. I often put on one of these 5 savasana songs as a musical reward for hard work. And that’s how yoga becomes fun every time after all :-).
