What yoga clothes do you wear to Aerial yoga?

Enjoy escaping gravity and floating through the air almost like a Cirque de Soleil artist? Aerial yoga, or sometimes called Anti Gravity yoga, is a fairly new form of yoga. But oh so fun! And it allows you to do therapeutically safe stretches that are difficult with other types of yoga. In this blog, you will find important info and tips about Aerial yoga. And, of course, answer the most important question: what yoga clothes do you wear to Aerial yoga?

What is Aerial yoga?

Aerial yoga was developed in 2014, so it is still very new. But unlike some new forms of yoga like beer yoga or goat yoga or similar fads, Aerial is definitely a beautiful form of yoga that you can get real benefits from both physically and mentally. You do the yoga poses in a cloth, which usually hangs to around knee height or hip height, depending on the yoga practice you are going to do. In fact, you have Aerial Yin or Aerial Restorative, beautiful therapeutic forms of Aerial where the cloth hangs lower to the ground. In these two forms of Aerial yoga, you hold the poses for long periods of time, in which you can achieve deep relaxation or deep stretches, as in the ground-based variants of yin and restorative. With Aerial, you only have the carrying aspect of the canvas.

With the dynamic version of Aerial yoga, it is almost like Vinyasa, where you flow from one pose to another. Here, you need to build muscle strength so it is also a bit more physically challenging. What’s really nice is that for your inversions, you usually don’t have any ground. So you can practise your shoulder pose completely loose in the air, for example. The advantage of this is that there is little to no compression for the neck and gravity can give you a hand to really create good space in your spine and neck. Shavanasa in the cloth is also a special experience that offers very deep relaxation for people. In fact, it almost makes you feel as if you are secure in your mother’s belly. The cloth is almost completely closed, so you really are in your own little world for a while. You float through the air, rocking or not, as you choose.

The best yoga pants for Aerial yoga

Because you are dealing with a fair amount of fabric from the Aerial cloth, it is recommended that you wear yoga pants for Aerial yoga. This is because yoga trousers that do not fit could get tangled in the fabric, which can be dangerous. Also, wide-fitting yoga pants have a higher risk of the fabric accumulating somewhere, causing skewed poses or unbalanced compression that could lead to injuries. It is advisable to have yoga pants with wrap-around straps on to Aerial yoga, as many beginners experience painful compression with the fabric around the hips. In some yoga studios, they use blankets to make it a bit softer. But if you already have an extra layer on yourself, it can make a fair bit of difference. Urban Goddess yoga clothing has the Shaktified yoga leggings with a wrap-around waistband that is thus very suitable for Aerial yoga, as well as a lot of other yoga forms. These yoga leggings are always in our collection and we usually have them in many different colours and prints.

The best yoga top for Aerial Yoga

Not all yoga studios are equally clear about it, but for hygiene and your own comfort, it is often mandatory to put on a yoga top or yoga long sleeve shirt. A short sleeve covering the armpit is sufficient, but it is often very nice to put on a long-sleeve yoga top. What is very important is to put on a yoga top that is not too wide so you don’t get caught. A good tip is actually to make sure your yoga top is long enough to tuck into your yoga leggings. That way, you can be sure the top won’t twist or slide upwards during your yoga practice. Urban Goddess yoga apparel, for example, has the Karuna OM longsleeves, which are nice and thin, long enough to tuck into your yoga leggings and with a nice thin sleeve that doesn’t hinder your freedom of movement.
