The Forgotten Language of the Body – Somatic Intelligence

Posted by Marlene Smits on

In a world where so many of us live from the ego/mind, overthink, overanalyze, and overperform, the body often becomes background noise. But our bodies are constantly speaking — through tension, posture, and subtle sensations. Somatic intelligence is the art of listening to our body’s language. It’s the embodied awareness that allows us to move, feel, and live from the inside out.

In yoga, every inhale and exhale is an opportunity to reconnect. But true embodiment goes deeper than alignment or perfect form — it’s a practice of sensitivity, presence, and trust. It’s learning to tune in rather than check out.

What is somatic intelligence?

The term somatic comes from the Greek word soma, meaning ‘living body.’ Somatic intelligence is our innate ability to sense and interpret the physical messages our bodies send us. It’s the awareness that your body remembers — every joy, every heartbreak, every unfinished emotion. As we often say in yin yoga, your issues are stored in your tissues.

Modern neuroscience confirms what yogis have always known: the body holds wisdom that the mind often ignores. Through interoception — the perception of internal sensations — we regulate emotion, build resilience, and stay connected to our sense of self.

Yoga as somatic practice

On the mat, somatic intelligence looks like this:

You feel, instead of performing. You don’t look at others in your class and try to push yourself deeper into a pose. But you go within, feel the pose, its subtleties, the space it creates.

You move at the pace of your breath, not your ambition. Integrate your breath with your practice, with a sense of curiosity and newness, even if you have done a million sun salutations. You stay curious about the sensations that arise — without labeling them good or bad.

Moving as if it were the first time, sensitive to the sensations and your breath, takes you to a sacred space.

Beyond the mat

Somatic intelligence doesn’t end when you roll up your mat. It’s in the way you walk, the way you breathe when you’re stressed, the way you pause before reacting.
Each moment offers an invitation to return — to your body, your breath, your truth.

When you practice listening, your body becomes not a burden, but your most honest guide. And in that listening, you come home to yourself and to your inner stillness that always can be found beyond the noise — again and again.

Love, Marlene
