Your Yoga Mat and Your Skin: why Cleaning it is a must

Posted by Tamara Heijkoop on

You probably know the feeling: after a great yoga class, you roll up your mat, maybe a little sweaty, pleasantly tired, but totally relaxed. Then it’s off to the rest of your day. What we often forget, though, is that your mat has become a landing spot for sweat, oil, and bacteria. Totally normal, but not exactly ideal for your skin.

Over time, that buildup can lead to small irritations or even breakouts on your back and shoulders (a.k.a. “backne”). This is especially true if you practice regularly and don’t clean your mat often. The combo of heat, friction, and bacteria? That’s something your skin would rather skip.

Cleaning as Self-Care

Cleaning your yoga mat isn’t just a practical step, it’s a beautiful ritual. Think of it as the final part of your practice: your body has worked, your mind has settled, and now it’s time to release the energy of the day.

Use gentle, natural cleaners instead of harsh sprays or chemical disinfectants. Your mat is often made of natural materials, and it responds best to kind, mindful care.

Want to Make Your Own Natural Yoga Spray? It’s super easy:

DIY Natural Yoga Mat Spray

You’ll need:

  • 1 part water

  • 1 part vinegar or witch hazel (disinfecting)

  • A few drops of tea tree oil (antibacterial)

  • A few drops of lavender oil (calming and beautifully scented)

How to use it:

  1. Mix everything in a small spray bottle.

  2. Lightly mist your mat after each practice.

  3. Wipe clean with a soft cloth.

  4. Let it air dry completely before rolling it up.

And that’s it! Your mat will smell fresh, feel clean, and stay in great shape for longer.

Skin in Balance

Still dealing with sensitive skin after practice? Try showering right after class and wear breathable yoga wear. Materials like organic cotton and bamboo allow your skin to breathe, while synthetic fabrics tend to trap heat. Potentially making breakouts worse. On top of that, bamboo has natural antibacterial properties, giving you easy and natural protection against bad bacteria.

By caring for your mat and your skin, you’re also caring for yourself. It’s all part of your practice: being present with your body, your surroundings, and the little things that support your daily flow.

A clean mat doesn’t just feel better, it lifts your whole practice. Makes it lighter, softer, more energising. Because everything you give your attention to, grows and even something as simple as cleaning your yoga mat.
