Yoga & Energy: Spot Your Energy Boosters and Drainers

Posted by Tamara Heijkoop on

Ever feel completely energized after talking to someone, but totally drained after another chat? Or notice how one task lifts you up while another leaves you running on empty? That’s not random. In this blog, we explore the difference between energy boosters and energy drainers – and how yoga can help you become more aware of them and take better care of your energy.

What are energy boosters and energy drainers?

Energy boosters are people, activities, or environments that leave you feeling uplifted. You might feel lighter, clearer, more joyful or calm. Think of a great conversation, time in nature, doing something creative, or a nourishing yoga session.

Energy drainers, on the other hand, cost you a lot of energy. You feel tired, flat, or even frustrated afterwards. This could be an overflowing inbox, social obligations you didn’t want to commit to, or even clothing that just doesn’t feel right.

What does yoga have to do with this?

Yoga helps you tune in to what you really need. By coming to your mat regularly, you become more aware of what’s happening in your body and mind. You learn to feel your energy: where it flows freely, and where it gets stuck.

Sometimes during a yoga session you suddenly realize: wow, I’m totally wiped out today – or: I feel so alive right now!. That kind of insight is gold. Yoga teaches you to slow down, connect, and make more conscious choices. It helps you take your energy seriously.

3 ways yoga helps with energy management

1. You learn to recognize your limits

On the mat, you notice more quickly when something’s just too much. Too intense, too fast, or just not right for that moment. That awareness transfers into everyday life. Yoga helps you spot your boundaries – physically, emotionally, and mentally.

2. You connect with what truly nourishes you

Some days call for a calming Yin session, other days a more active Vinyasa. Through yoga, you learn to feel what your body and mind need – in that moment. And that’s what self-care is all about.

3. You learn to let go

Yoga also teaches you not to force things. Not every pose needs to be perfect, and not every day will feel the same. By releasing tension, you create space for new energy to flow in.

Tip: Pay attention to what you wear

Did you know your clothes can also affect your energy? Natural, soft fabrics like organic cotton or bamboo breathe better, move with you, and feel good on your skin. They literally help you breathe more freely. Tight, synthetic clothing can feel restrictive or even agitating. Choose mindfully – especially during yoga or meditation.

Yoga doesn’t just make you more flexible – it makes you more aware. Of your body, your breath, your thoughts – and your energy. So next time you feel drained, take a moment to reflect: what gave me energy today, and what took it away?

Yoga helps you get clearer about the difference. And once you start trusting that inner compass, it becomes so much easier to make choices that truly support you.
